Synonyms of "Pit" and their differences
Q:
Jaka jest różnica między pit i crater ?
A:
A "crater" tends to be a result of an impact, such as an asteroid, or from the explosion of a bomb or from a gas leak. Describing the 1993 terrorist bomb attack on the World Trade Center the WTC 911 memorial page states "The blast from the bomb created a crater several stories deep in the belowground levels of the complex". And the surface of the moon, for example, is covered in craters.
A "pit" on the other hand tends to be man-made, often dug in order to bury things, as would be the case in a mass grave. A pit would refer to something larger than a hole in the ground, and would probably have at least one dimension of at least a few metres. The term "pit" or "pitted" is also used to refer to surface imperfections, for example: the surface of the vehicle was badly pitted from the impact of gravel. Things are also often described as pitted from oxidation.

Translations of "Pit"
Q:
Jak to przetłumaczyć na angielski (amerykański)? Can I call it pit? Don’t fall in to the pit. Watch out
A:
This is very difficult, I think you will sometimes hear people say 'tree well' - "Watch out, don't fall in the tree well!". Really, 'tree well' means the area under a tree that is protected from snow, but I think many English speakers would use that term in this context too. But if we had to say something quickly, we would probably just say "Watch out, don't fall in the hole!".

A:
Short answer: A "pit bull" (or "pit bull terrier") is a type of dog.
Long answer: I am not 100% positive about the etymology, however often dog breed names have something to do with what the type of dog was trained or used for by people in the past. For example, as I have read, the dachshund breed (literally meaning "badger hound/dog" in German), was used by badger hunters. The dachshund would chase the badgers out of their underground dens, then the hunters could hunt the badgers. In the case of a pit bull, I have read that the dogs were put into pits (a sort of dug-out, large hole in the ground) where they would fight or hunt rats and people would bet on the dogs. I am not sure that is true, but I have read it in a few online articles.
