Yes in Madarin Chinese and no in Cantonese. 片 is usually used as the counter for thin objects.

It means “slice”! It’s generally used as counter for anything that is wide and flat and thin.
Examples:
1. Similar meaning as the counter “slice” in English
一片麵包 a slice of bread
一片披薩 a slice of pizza
一片吐司 a slice of toast
一片樹葉 a leaf
2. Used as counter for something that’s flat, and very wide and limitless
一片草地 grassland
一片汪洋 deep ocean
一片藍天 blue sky
一片花海 lit: flower ocean / meaning: an ocean of flowers (“an ocean of” being a metaphor to emphasize how many flowers there are)
It’s a bit tricky to translate directly to English.
Basically if you say “一片藍天” this gives the visual image to others of: a sky that is blue and wide and limitless.
一片汪洋 = a deep and limitless ocean
一片草地 = a piece of grass land that’s very wide that you can’t see the borders of it
3. Counter for ...intangible things?
一片空白 = blank
eg 腦海一片空白 (someone’s) head is all blank and empty (means they have no absolutely no clue)
一片混亂 = a mess
eg 房間一片混亂 The room is a mess
Also I think 片 could be used as a VERB in rare cases, which it will have the same meaning as Slice (verb) in English. Can’t think of any examples from the top of my head now tho...

i think it’s used as a counter for for medicine because usually medicines are in a flat circular shapes?
I never heard anyone said 一片藥 (I’m from Hong Kong) so I assume this usage is probably more common Mandarin (probably mainland China)
In Hong Kong and Taiwan 顆 or 粒 is more commonly used as the counter of medicine.

FYI : I found a page that has a lot of examples that uses 片 as counters. Pretty useful since it’s used as counter for many intangible things...those you might just have to memorize : http://m.zaojv.com/4856197.html
