If someone seems like they have something on their mind and you want to know what it is, you can ask them:

A penny for your thoughts?

Although I don’t personally hear this used that much anymore. People usually just say:

What are you thinking about?

Or something like that.

Literally, "I will give you a penny to hear your thoughts."
Figuratively, "Please tell me what you`re thinking."
You can use it if your friend looks worried or you want them to open up to you.

@Momo-ji Ah, I got the hang of it. When I first saw it, I thought what it means is like I can bet a penny on the fact that you’re now thinking.

Now I saw what its nuance actually is, and well, I think I was close!!😄
