@SAKURAnoG The key here is "to be". What they want is an experience, a state of being. They want themselves to be wanted by someone else. They want to be the thing that is wanted/desired/valued/liked. They want to be the thing that someone else wants so strongly. They wish to be desired. They wish to be cared about.
They want = their desire, their hope, their wish, etc
to be wanted = to feel valued by someone else, to have someone else desire them, to be (or to feel) valuable. They want to be what someone else wishes they could have. They want to be the thing that makes someone else feel happy. They want to be what someone else desires. They want someone to care about them.
It is like an inversion of the concept: what they most want...is for someone else to want them back. Most statements about "wanting" something are about my desire going outward --> towards the things I want. But in this case, they want to reverse that. The thing they most want, is for someone else in the world to have desire towards themselves. They want to receive the wanting, not to give the wanting. So that is why it is using "to be" here, to make "wanted' into a state of being, an experience. So instead of you wanting something else, it is about something else wanting you. Without that "to be" part, it would be assumed that it was about an external thing that you wanted, an object.
For example:
- All I wanted was to be thankful. = what I most desired was to feel thankful, to experience a state of thankfulness.
- All I wanted was to be angry. = what I most desired was to feel anger, to experience a state of strong anger with nothing else.
- All I wanted was to be happy. = what I most desired was to feel happy, to experience a state of happiness with nothing else.
- All I wanted was to be wanted. = what I most desired was to feel wanted/desired/valued [by someone else], to experience a state of being cared about by someone else, to feel like I was important to someone else. I want to experience them wanting me.
But if you say "All I wanted was anger" then it could mean you wanted someone else to be angry, or you wanted to see an example of anger to study it, or you wanted to cause anger in other people, or you wanted to promote anger as an ideal, or you wanted to feel anger yourself...etc it is very generalized in meaning and could be confusing what is meant. Saying "to be" tells us that this is something you want to be, to inhabit, to experience yourself, to become yourself. So "to be angry" tells us you want to experience anger yourself, etc. So if the sentences uses "to be" it adds a very specific meaning to it.
So "to be wanted/desired/liked/valued" means they wish to experience these things themselves. They don't just want it, they want "to be" it (to become it, to feel it, to experience it).
It is a complex idea, but hopefully that makes sense. It is not easy to explain.

"all that I desired/craved/wished for was to be wanted [for someone to want me, for someone to want to be around me, for someone to like me, for someone to love me, for someone to care about me]. "
Depends on context to know exactly what nuance of "wanted" they wished someone would feel towards them. (friends, family, acceptance, lust, love, romance, home, etc). But to know that you are wanted, can be a powerful feeling. A lot of people crave that feeling, and it can be very lonely when you don't feel that from anyone. Even people who like to spend some time alone, they don't always like to feel lonely, abandoned, ignored or unwelcome. People want to feel wanted and welcome and cared about and appreciated. It's a part of being human and alive.

@OwLeho Thanks a lot. It's very helpful.
And, may I ask a bit more about "was to be". What's the difference between "was wanted"and "was to be wanted"?
All that I wanted was actually wanted, was going to be wanted, or unlikely to be gotten or realized?
What is this phrase meant to say with "to be wanted"instead of saying "was wanted " ?
Your answer would be really wanted!

@OwLeho Thank you very much for your kind and detailed explanation. I've now fully understood. Actually, I like the way you give examples, that are very convincing.

By the way, could you be kind enough to answer another question of mine, that has been left unanswered?
Please read if you don't mind.
It's an old song lyrics sung by For Real entitled "You Don't Know Nothin'"
What do they say, or talk about during their long walk?
The lyrics say:
"You know I love long walks in the park (You know, I do)
Like the ones we always say
(I do, Love you)"
l first thought that 'say' might be a misprint of "take", but "say"is rhyming with "away"two lines below.
Furthermore, in this verse, YOU are apparently unconscious of MY love. So, an interpretation that ""We always say, "I do, Love you"makes no sense.
I'm entirely purplexed. I'd be very, very happy if you ciuld help me in this, too.

@SAKURAnoG Okay, I looked at the lyrics (thank you for linking them!) and I agree that "say" doesn't make a lot of sense here. So I found a copy of the song to listen to, and after listening to it I'm certain she actually says "like the ones we always take". The final 's' from 'always' does get run together into 'take', but you can hear the 't' and the 'k' still in there. And if it was "say" then the vowel would get drawn out very long into an ayyyy type sound. And it doesn't do that.
Now 'take' doesn't rhyme with 'away', but sometimes rhyming can get fudged in a song. The vowel sound is pretty similar so they may have decided to fudge it instead of picking a better word that truly rhymed. It is not too uncommon to do that sometimes.
It is also possible that the song was originally supposed to use "say" but the singer changed it when they sang it, because they didn't feel like "say" made as much sense. That happens sometimes too. But if that happened, then it would be easy for the original version of the lyrics to be printed instead of the ones she actually sang. It would not be the first time that sort of thing happened. Which might explain why the printed lyrics use "say" instead.
It is also possible the whole line was slightly different. So as a possible example, it could even be that the original line was more like:
"You know I love long walks in the park (You know, I do)
the ones when we say (I do, Love you)"
However, if the singer didn't get why it was phrased that way (that it was doing a clever thing with tying in with the background singers saying "I do, love you" that time) then it could have felt like a really awkward sentence. Like why is it saying "the ones when we say"? like "say what?" exactly where is it going with this? That feels like an unfinished thought! It could feel like a weird line to have to sing. If she wasn't sold on the line, then that would make it hard to remember in the middle of the song and easy to get started wrong or mess up the word order. But what she actually sang in the final version "like the ones we always take" is very logical, feels natural, fits the style of the song...So if she struggled to remember how the line was supposed to go, or if she just started to say it wrong with "like" (which starting it out that way would throw the whole thing off in rhythm) and then maybe she improvised to fix her mistake by saying "the ones we always take" to finish it without ruining the recording...honestly, that would be a very logical substitute and they may have just decided it was good that way. That it was better to keep the improvised substitute line instead of re-recording it one more time. Especially if she was struggling to get that line without any mistakes, so maybe this was the best recording so far. If so, then why worry about a slightly changed line...so they kept it. I could easily see that happening. Keep in mind, this is just a guess that I made up. It is not an uncommon scenario when recording music though, so it is certainly possible.
In any case, whether they wrote it with a fudged rhyme on purpose, or if she improvised a different version of the sentence...she definitely says "take". And she does a decent enough job when singing it, that it doesn't really sound like it is out of place even though it doesn't quite rhyme with "away". So it mostly worked.

@OwLeho I can't thank you too much. It's very clear now, and I'm fully convinced.
Thank you for your time and for your polite replies. Also I thought that your 'guess' was very plausible and convincing.
I felt as if I were really there in a recording studio, seeing her struggling, wondering how.
Thank you again for your superb help!
