"Successful" is an adjective. You can't say "a successful" except if you put a noun after it.

Example: "He had a successful day at work."

"Success" is a noun. You can have "a success."

In terms of the attempted meaning there is not difference however there is a minor mistake.

If you think you did better than usual, that's a success. (Success is a noun.)
If you think you did better than usual, that's successful. (Successful is an adjective and we don’t need “a”.)
