Could you please help check my understanding of the uses of FOR in 1 and 2, and explain to me 3 and 4?

1. My kitchen has room for a table.
- The kitchen has a position where a table can be put.

2. I have a love for spaghetti.
- Spaghetti tastes very good for (to?) me.

3. He has a need for patience.
- Dunno this one. Why it doesn’t use “of”?

4. He is intellectually superior to the other students, and has the capacity for learning languages.
- Does this one mean the type of capacity?

1 - correct
2 - correct
3 - he is an impatient person, he needs to be more patient (this is similar to 1. "Need" can meant "have a lack of")
4 - He is cleverer than the other students and is clever enough to learn languages (He has the capacity(=capability), similar to 1)

I think 3, if you want to use of, you would say "He is in need of patience". But I'm a native speaker, I say sentences that feel right, rather than use rules!

First of all, the first two are fine – and yes, you should say that it tastes very good to you

Every single one of these sentences can be understood in exactly the same way –

(there is a place to put something) FOR (the thing that goes in the space)

The kitchen has room – table takes up that room

I have the ability to love – spaghetti is loved by me

He has an unfulfilled need – patience could take up the space

He has a large intellectual capacity – languages can go in there


You could certainly also say – of – in the third one, if you want to make it sound a little more archaic.

Otherwise – yeah, for is basically like – thing goes here.

@isthmus_x I think you put into words what I intuitively feel here - all these uses talk about having the space (whether literal or metaphorical) for something.
