Hi!

i'm using Duolingo app and i read that the word "imasu/arimasu" can mean "there is/are" or even "i have" ( like this "petto wa imasu" -> "i have a pet").
Anyway, i'm confused cause i saw a lot of sentences where the word "imasu" had an other different meaning. For example:

"Tokyo ni sunde imasu" -> "I live in Tokyo"

so is not true that imasu have only those two meaning?!

i'm so confused lol, i'm sorry

“Imasu” used as a verb means “i have” or “there is”
“Imasu” used with another verb makes the sentence more formal.

Tokyo ni sunde iru (not formal)
Tokyo ni sunde imasu (formal)

(Think of “be” in English. They work differently as verbs or auxiliary verbs.
“I am at home”. vs “I am studying Japanese)

Iru means basically the same with imasu as a verb but is not as formal.

"iru", "ita", "imasu", and "imashita" are used for creature.
"aru", "atta", "arimasu", "arimashita" are used for objects.

There is a chair.
→椅子がある
　isu ga arimasu.

Here's a person.
→ここに人がいる
　koko ni hito ga iru

I have a cat.
→私は猫を飼っている
　watashi wa neko wo katte iru

Imasu is used to mention about human and animals,creatures.
Arimasu is used to stuff and things.
