Period, when independence had lost (1795-1918). It's an amazing and at the same time tragic history of nation, that clung to every opportunity of independence, from Napoleon's plan to Anti-Russian Empire rebellions. It went under the banner of romanticism, but turned into positivism after 1863 failed uprising. There is no equivalent in any European country's history, and it's indeed an interesting topic for exploration.

@metroproxyn That does sound interesting! Are there any books in Polish that talk about this period that you like?

All the above periods are interesting indeed. But to me, the most intriguing part of our history is what happened after WWII - the rise and fall of communism, the transformation into a democratic country, and then all the reforms that took place in the 90s, leading us to what we are today. It was not so long ago and although people who witnessed all those things are to a great extent still alive, that era still hasn't been thoroughly investigated, and many of us have a strange feeling that plenty of things haven't been unveiled yet.
Unfortunately, I don't know any (neither reliable nor not) books on this topic.
