The problem with the first:
“whose” is used when it follows a HUMAN and precedes a noun.
eg. the man, whose hat is blue, is eating bread
The problem with the second:
In English, the misuse of commas is called “comma splices”. You should not use a comma here.
In English, we use “smashed screen” and “cracked screen” interchangeably but “cracked screen” sounds more natural.
My recommended sentence:
I dropped my smartphone and the screen cracked

I have a question about your first opinion. I looked up Oxford Advanced Lerner's Dictionary and found this example sentence.

"The ship, whose engine had failed, is now safely under tow." (tow)

Are the above sentences exceptions？

My guess is this sentence may be from a book/literature.

(What I’m about to say is more for advanced learners)
In literature, grammar is often played with and twisted for what we call “personification”. Personification is describing non-humans in a human like manner.
Eg. Leaves dancing across the lawn.
In the example above, leaves can’t realistically dance, but is given human characteristics in literature.

In casual conversations, stick to the rule I mentioned of the use of “whose”
