'oh my god' is an expression of amazement:
"Oh my god, this is great news!"
Excitement:
"Oh my god, I can't wait to go to Paris!"
disbelief:
"Oh my god, is this real? this can't be happening"
exasperation:
"Oh my god, you're so annoying!"
concern for someone if they've just hurt themself:
"Oh my god, are you okay?"
or, on its own, surprise/shock
"oh my god!"

'Oh my' is similar, but it feels toned down, more reserved and much less urgent than 'oh my god'.
