There is no real difference between them, their use depends on the person. From what I recall military members in the US armed forces would often say going back to the US that they were going "stateside"
A similar term is saying "down under" to refer to Australia

They can be said by anyone.
"Going to the states" is a lot more informal. You wouldn't say it at a formal meeting. (You would then use "going to the United States.")
"Going to America" is usually used to talk about the US as the 'land of the free.' It has a very positive feel to it. It is still widely used, but usually with excitement. "Going to the states/United States" has no emotion linked to it.
Hope that helps!

There is no difference, all of them are short for "the United States of America."

This is a matter of personal choice . Pick the one that you feel positive about. You may use any of them.

Do natives in the US also use 'America' as well? I've heard someone somewhere say in regards to this matter that "America is a continent. It's called the USA." But then we describe things as being 'American', we don't use 'United-statian'
Do you feel that America is too broad?
