What do you mean by correct?
I would say American is correct in America and British is correct in Britain, but there is no problem with using either anywhere. The same for Canadian, Australian, or Irish English.

Are you serious, people?
As do I understand that the oldest one should be considered as the "correct". So that's one is British. But now we have a thing called "international English", and it's American... And as everything Americans do - it's "more correct for everyone"
The correctest one ;)

@ClockworkBastatd But the English that's spoken in England today *isn't* the oldest one. If Shakespeare were alive today he wouldn't understand half of what you're talking about. And I'll wager you've never read Beowulf in the original language (English).

@OldGeezer, indeed I did not.
But do you really insist that color is spelled that way rather then colour? ;)
It's like asking is Russian spoje in Ukranie or Belarus is more correct

@ClockworkBastatd Actually it's nothing like that.
"Color" is the correct spelling in the US, and "colour" is the correct spelling in the UK.
But if you think that's wrong, you should contact the editor of the OED and set him straight.

@ClockworkBastatd The “oldest is most correct” makes some sense, but it doesn’t really work for English for at least two reasons.
One, multiple forms of English existed from before widespread writing. For example, a Yorkshire person would say “I have the barn eggs” and a Kent person would say “I gave the child eyren”. Which ones of those became “standard” depended on which the early printers happened to use. “Eyren” is now completely dead, but the Child/Barn split still exists in England.
Secondly, in a lot of ways American English is closer to Shakespeare’s English than modern British is, because shortly after the two languages split there was a fashion in Britain for importing French spellings (programme instead of program, for example).

International English isn't as different as everyone makes it out to be, I can understand Americans very well lol
