The word "social" is usually used to refer to individuals. We usually use this word when we want to talk about things that impact individuals or the way individuals interact. Sometimes we even use it to talk about all of society. It's a rather common word.
The word "societal" is usually used to refer to societies as a whole. We use this word we just want to say something is related to society, or to talk about the overall health or status of a society. It's somewhat uncommon and probably declining in use.
SOCIAL EXAMPLES:
* Dogs are highly social creatures. (They often interact with other individuals.)
* The candidate wishes to improve his social standing. (Become more popular.)
* Let's address some important social issues. (That affect individuals.)
* I care very much about social justice. (Protecting human rights and equality.)
* My son is such a "social butterfly." (He's so friendly and talkative w/others.)
Common collocation: social people, animals, creatures, "butterfly," interactions, situations, skills, media, issues, justice, affairs, welfare
SOCIETAL EXAMPLES:
* How can we bring about societal change? (How can we improve society overall?)
* Confucianism promotes societal harmony. (Peace and order within the community.)
* Costumes free us from societal norms. (Cultural expectations of behavior.)
* Racism is a very damaging societal ill. (Something that harms everyone.)
Common collocation: societal norms, expectations, order, structure, problems, ills, woes, change, shifts, division, factors

Social(~社会的) = relationships between people or animals, OR related to society
Societal = ONLY related to society
I will call 'related to relationships' sense a, and 'related to society' sense b.
Social is used for sense a, but societal is not:
"He is such a social person." = he interacts with others well, or a lot
"Eusocial insects include ants and bees." = ants' and bees' behavior is so related to their interactions, it determines everything that they do without any individual choices.
"My friend has anxiety about social interactions." = having to talk to or interact with other people makes my friend anxious.
Societal is the more normal word for sense b, even though it sounds a little academic:
"Societal attitudes favor the individual to the group in America." = In American society, people have the attitude that individual people are more important than groups.
"Unwritten societal rules usually prevent people from saying this." = Even though no-one officially enforces it, society does not want people to say this, so they don't usually.
However, Social can also be used for sense b, especially in certain phrases:
"Socialism" is a philosophy putting society in charge (社会主義)
"Social justice" is a concept about society being fair because of the equality between people, without any racism, sexism, classism, etc. Because this isn't the way society is, people use this as something we should move toward.
and in some regular sentences, it can also have sense b. In these cases, you would be able to replace it with 'societal' without changing the meaning much:
"Social change is slow and difficult." = Society changes slowly, and it is hard to change society.
"By that point, all of the people were socially integrated into their new country." = The people had become a part of the new country's society.
