Well, it would make sense if the main character was climbing a ladder. Czepiając się szczeblów means clinging to rungs. Are you sure the protagonist is using stairs, and not a ladder?

I'm assuming you meant "Czepiasz się szczegółów". It has the same meaning as "you're nitpicking"

@CasualGuy no, it is not what is written in this text. I am trying to understand the meaning of czepiając się szczeblów, szczebel is rung as I found on the dictionary, but the meaning of the verb is not clear to me in this context. in this text the main character is climbing a stair with huge difficulties, as he is constantly falling.

@CasualGuy I am not sure, because it uses "schody" that if I'm not wrong should mean stairs, but then it uses also wdrapywać się tha t should mean climb. so, I am not sure. in the story the main character loses the " siła tarcia", so he cannot move, but rather he is crawling, so it could be climbing on the stairs because of his situation.
- polski
"Siła tarcia" means friction, so I would say you're right. Just one more thing, wdrapywać się is harder than just climbing, it indicates that you have to struggle, in order to achieve your goal. I believe "scramble" is the word for that

@CasualGuy thank you, but I'm translating into Italian, but to tell the truth I cannot think of an equivalent in my language. so, do you think it is fine to translate schody as stairs?
- polski
Of course, schody = stairs! I should've confirmed that earlier, sorry for that

As above everything is explained, so I will add only that, it's of course some archaic conjugation.
Today correct is "czepiać się szczebli", not "szczeblów".
Also now:
"szczebel" is part of "drabina (ladder),
while
"stopień" is part of "schody" (stairs).
In "Dziwna historia" there is "szczebel" as part of "schody" :D

@Isuniuniu thank you as always! so do you think I should translate szczebel as " step" and not as rung? my concern is to add this kind of archaism in my translation or not, the problem is that most of them doesn't have an equivalent in Italian, and I don't want it to sound heavy or fake. for example I would like to translate expressions as " pan jesteś" which are funny mistakes of style ( using ty and pan at the same time) but it would be impossible in my language. struggles. but as always I am really grateful!

@anna7weltschmerz I think that for making archaic-like translation it should go as old-polish->modern polish->modern italian->old-italian.
Thanks to that you save the sense and context and it will sounds more natural in your language. So definitely translate as "step" and if you don't archaic version of it in your language, leave it as it is :)
BTW when you are angry at someone who you don't know you can say "pan jesteś".
Głupi pan jesteś?!

@Isuniuniu so it is an expression used even nowadays, because my teacher told me that it was used mostly by an older generation and it sounds quite illiterate, as someone who is trying to use a sophisticated language but fails to do so.

@anna7weltschmerz In general he is right, but you still can use this form of speaking, when you want to add little more aggressivness and impolitness to your tone, when you have argue with someone strange. For e.g, when drivers have some bad meeting:
"Jak pan jeździsz?!" is more impolite than "jak pan jeździ?!", but less than "jak jeździsz pacanie?!" :)
And some advice for future: try to paste whole sentence to questions, because without knowgledge about with what text you are working, we treat that archaic forms like a mistake :)
