Pytanie o angielski (brytyjski)
Why should the sentence "Sorry, I'm late. My car _BROKE_ down on my way here" have the past simple but not the present perfect?
If I'm not mistaken we use the present perfect if there is a result of an action. And we have such a result in this sentences as he/she was late. It is the result. But it is written in the answers of my student-book that we should put the past simple.
Please, tell me if I am right in my point of view ir not.

We would only use present perfect if for example talking immediately after the car actually breaking down, e.g. phoning someone -"Sorry I am going to be late as my car has broken down". In the sentence you posted, there is some delay between the car breaking down and you arriving (after all you have said you were late because of it) and in this case the connection with the present is broken and we use the simple past....
