Pytanie o angielski (brytyjski)

Why should the sentence "Sorry, I'm late. My car _BROKE_ down on my way here" have the past simple but not the present perfect?
If I'm not mistaken we use the present perfect if there is a result of an action. And we have such a result in this sentences as he/she was late. It is the result. But it is written in the answers of my student-book that we should put the past simple.

Please, tell me if I am right in my point of view ir not.
