"Siemanko" (or "siemano") is the informal abbreviation of "jak się masz", therefore its English meaning is closer to "how are you". It is used to greet people you know very well in the most informal situations.

@jacekd no, it is like I wrote above, so the informal term of "hi". See the explanation under this link - https://sjp.pl/siemanko

@Mark1975 : I suggest you have a look at two entries, one at Poradnia Językowa: https://sjp.pwn.pl/poradnia/haslo/siema;5924.html and the other one being the entry in the Słownik Języka Polskiego PWN https://sjp.pwn.pl/slowniki/siemanko.html . They both clearly show that the etymology of "siemano" is the phrase "jak się masz". Somehow I feel more confident with the entries written by professionals, rather than by anonymous you-don't-know-who.

@jacekd well, there is apparently a contradiction between various sources. the fact however remains Elisa is rather asking I think about a common meaning of this term than about a word derivation. the terms "siemanko, siema, siemka" are to the best of my knowledge used instead of "cześć=hi". I have never heard it in the context you provided.

@Mark1975: we disagree on the etymology (and perhaps the very exact meaning), but I think we agree to the use of the aforementioned phrase, as I wrote above: "It is used to greet people you know very well in the most informal situations." I can easily imagine I use "siema(n(ko))" to greet my friends when I meet them in a pub, but I can hardly imagine myself greeting the same people that way during an official meeting at work, as it would be inappriopriate. I wouldn't greet that way the people I don't know very well, either.

@jacekd yes, correct, I could not agree more.
As I wrote above it is an informal way of saying "hi" to your friends, buddies, so to greet them in this manner. However, it is exactly what is clearly understood by ppl to who you say "siema", not "jak się masz=how are you" as you mentioned in the beginning.
So, it now looks as if you at least partly disagree with yourself ☺.

@Mark1975 : the exact meaning of a word/phrase is one; the circumstances when you use it is a different matter. Now think, haven't you greeted anyone with "jak się masz/jak się macie" instead of "cześć"? I have. Many times.

@jacekd quite the contrary. I greeted my mates in this way many times. you are muddling the things.
this form has nothing to do with the core of the question, so with an informal way of saying "hi". "cześć" and "jak się masz" are after all not the same forms of greeting, are they?

@Mark1975 : I think it's best to end this discussion. You are not going to convince me "siema(n(ko))" is just another form of "cześć". I am not going to convince you "siema(n(ko))" is just abbreviated form of "jak się masz" and therefore its meaning is closer to "how are you" (which happens to be a form of greeting).
You can greet people in many ways, but that doesn't make all the greetings to have one meaning only.

@jacekd ok, but it does not change the fact that people responding to "siemanko" greeting never say "dobrze, swietnie=fine, great", what is a common response to the question "jak sie masz=how are you". so, the point is not about covincing each other as to the subjective views but taking about aspects featuring natural language.
